Parsons Scholars is proud to announce the second annual Art, Community, and Self-Sustainability Conference. The conference provides the chance for community members to connect through the exploration of topics including mental, physical, and spiritual well-being with special attention being paid to the specific needs of artists and designers. This year’s theme is Honoring Yourself and Your Communities.Â
Our 2025 keynote speaker is Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and illustrator, Medar de la Cruz. Medar is a fine artist and illustrator and won the prize for his illustrative journalism piece The Diary of a Riker’s Island Library Worker which was published in The New Yorker in 2023. He will lead an interactive keynote session focusing on art, access, and the importance of creating in an authentic voice.Â

Illustrator Medar de la Cruz shares his journey from a young artist figuring things out to building a career in art and design. Through personal stories and live drawing, he’ll talk about the challenges, lessons, and experiences that shaped his path. Students are encouraged to sketch along and collaborate with eachother, using the talk as a chance to explore their own creativity while gaining insight into the realities of working in the creative industry.
